Please read this before relying on the output of any conversion, particularly for print, medical, forensic or archival work.

Lossy formats discard data permanently

JPG, WebP and AVIF are lossy formats. When you convert into one, the encoder throws away image information to reach a smaller file. That data cannot be recovered — not by us, not by anyone.

The most common way people get caught out is a format round-trip: converting a JPG to PNG and back to JPG does not restore the original, it applies a second lossy pass to already-lossy data. If you need to edit an image repeatedly, work from a lossless copy.

Browser-dependent format support

Every tool here runs in your browser using the codecs that browser provides. Support differs between browsers and versions, and it is not something we control.

Formats such as HEIC and TIFF are not decodable by mainstream browsers at all, so no browser-side tool can convert them. Our converter detects this and tells you rather than failing silently, but it cannot work around it. Formats your browser cannot encode are hidden from the output list automatically.

Quality and size targets are estimates until you check

The size shown next to a setting before conversion is an estimate derived from the source dimensions and the settings you chose. It is not a measurement.

When you enable a target file size, the converter searches for the highest quality that fits that budget, and will reduce pixel dimensions if quality alone cannot get there. If it cannot reach the target, it says so — but review the result before relying on it.

Colour management

Colour is handled in the browser's space (sRGB) with no support for embedded ICC profiles in most cases. Highly saturated images in wide-gamut profiles may shift slightly in appearance after conversion.

Not for professional or regulated use

This is a general-purpose web utility. Do not use it for medical imaging, forensic analysis, legal evidence, archival preservation of masters, or any application where a conversion error could cause harm.

Availability

The service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. We do not guarantee that it will be available, uninterrupted, or free of errors at any given time.

Reporting a problem

If a conversion produced a result you believe is wrong, we would like to know. Email hello@pixelforge.example with the file's format, the settings you used and what you expected — but please do not send the image itself.
